2015 Study on Land and Infrastructure Development Potential in Latin America and the Caribbean

1. Background

ㆍThe importance of strategic approaches to international development assistance has been growing since Korea joined the OECD DAC (Development Assistance Committee).

ㆍGiven that an infrastructure development plan usually covers three to four countries, previous country-based approach is not appropriate, especially when bidding for the construction contracts.

ㆍConsidering the poor safety and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region, conditions to implement long-term projects in the region should be reviewed.

ㆍInfrastructure development and improvement can go hand in hand to strengthen partnership between Korea and LAC countries.

ㆍWith its high value-added resources and population, LAC region is an attractive market for infrastructure.

2. Purpose

ㆍTo perform a time series analysis based on research on infrastructure first in the LAC region and second around the world

3. Project Description

The researches conducted in this study were:

ㆍa comprehensive research defining “infrastructure” and assessing land development by country based on existing infrastructure research by MDBs

ㆍdevelopment of infrastructure index using analytic hierarchy process (AHP)

ㆍan analysis of infrastructure issues and indices by country in LAC region.

4. Impacts and Benefits

ㆍThe findings of this study can be used for Korean businesses to have more opportunities in overseas markets and for international development partnership.

ㆍA research on infrastructure development around the world in this study helped identify development gaps across the world, and the finding helped evaluate development potential and plans of each region/country.

ㆍThe time series analysis in this study showed infrastructure development for the past two decades.
