International seminar on National Progress Report regarding New Urban Agenda (NUA)
Date: July 24, 2024
Venue: Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture, Seoul, South Korea
On July 24, 2024, KRIHS hosted an international seminar on the National Progress Report regarding the New Urban Agenda (NUA). The seminar aimed to share knowledge and experience related to the practical implementation of the NUA and to serve as a platform for discussion and collaboration on sustainable urban development.
The seminar began with a keynote speech by Dr. Edlam Abera Yemeru, director of the external relations, strategy, knowledge, and innovation division at UN-HABITAT. Following the keynote address, Bobae Lee, programme management officer at UN-HABITAT, and Bernhard Barth, human settlements officer at UN-HABITAT, presented new guidelines and support frameworks for the National Progress Report developed by UN-HABITAT. After the presentations, Youn Hee Jeong, director of GDPC at KRIHS, Dr. André Müller, senior researcher at BBSR, and Bo Söderberg, professor at KTH, shared their insights on the reports by focusing on key aspects such as methodology, citizen participation, and data monitoring.
The event concluded with a panel discussion and Q&A session that addressed topics such as the urban policy and citizen participation strategies of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), plans to enhance urban planning and citizen participation in South Korea, and the role of national and local governments in implementing the NUA. The knowledge that was shared and the discussions that were held during the seminar are expected to improve future National Progress Reports and further collaboration to build a sustainable urban environment.
