KRIHS-GDSL: Geospatial Data Science Knowledge Exchange Seminar

Date: June 7 (Wed) ~ 9 (Fri), 2023

Venue: KRIHS, Sejong, Korea

The KRIHS Data Lab and the Geographic Data Science Lab (GDSL) at the University of Liverpool in the UK organized a serial knowledge exchange seminar on Geospatial Data Sciences on June 8 (Thurs) at KRIHS and on June 9 (Fri) at the University of Seoul. The seminar, an action item of a UK government-funded international collaborative research project between KRIHS and the GDSL, addressed various topics on the theme of “Geospatial Data Sciences for future cities and society: focusing on analysis of digital footprint data.” During the first seminar at KRIHS, Prof. Daniel Arribas-Bel of the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Liverpool and the Urban Analytics Center of the Alan Turing Institute made a presentation about Urban Grammar, a project using data science and machine learning to build a detailed, consistent, and scalable characterization of urban form and function in Britain. Other members of the GDSL and KRIHS Data Lab, as well as data scientists from Korea National University of Transportation and Inha University, discussed a range of new methods to analyze urban spatial structures with new types of digital footprint data. The second seminar at the University of Seoul dealt with novel and interesting ideas covering Chat GPT, urban data sensors, smartphone-based voluntary geographic datasets, etc. Prof. Alex Singleton showed new approaches to improving consumer data research by integrating Chat GPT. Including Prof. Mingyu Kang, the other participants showcased what kinds of digital footprint data have been cumulated without our notice and how they can help us understand the post effects of COVID-19, changes in human mobility patterns, and regional-scale distribution of traffic-related air pollutants.
