KRIHS organized an institutional session at the 2023 Spring Congress of Korea Planning Association on April 26 (Wed). The session focused on the digital transformation of development cooperation using spatial information.


During the session, Hyeyoung Woo, the team leader of Korea Development Institute, presented the trends in utilizing development cooperation data, with a specific emphasis on the utilization of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) in conjunction with geospatial information. She also addressed the major issues and challenges associated with the digital transformation of development cooperation, centering around the theme of “The Trend of Digital Transformation of Development Cooperation and Cases of Utilization of Geospatial Information.” Following that, Byoung Jae Lee, a research fellow of the Global Development Partnership Center, KRIHS, presented various cases of system development to support urban flood prevention measures in Vietnam. His presentation revolved around the theme of “Support for Disaster Prevention in Rapidly Growing Cities in Developing Countries through Digital Transformation.” Furthermore, Seolah Bang, an associate research fellow of the Korean Peninsula & East Asian Research Center, KRIHS, highlighted the necessity for integrated ODA and geospatial information portals. She presented specific cases demonstrating the utilization of development cooperation data in conjunction with geospatial information. Additionally, she showcased the ODA spatial information portal established for demonstration purposes as part of the broader theme of “Measures for Establishing a Spatial Information Portal for the Promotion of Integrated ODA.”


During the subsequent discussion, chaired by Director Sang Keon Lee of the Global Development Partnership Center, KRIHS, attendees such as Director Junho Maeng from the Office for International Development Cooperation, the Office for Government Policy Coordination, Associate Research Fellow Jae Soen Son from the Geospatially Enabled Society Research Division, KRIHS, Professor Eunju Kim from Hansung University Department of Public Administration, and Professor Jaebin Lim from Chungnam National University Graduate School of National Policy actively expressed their opinions. The discussion revolved around the significance of digital transformation utilizing geospatial information in the context of development cooperation. Furthermore, they explored topics such as the future direction of an integrated ODA platform and strategies for connecting the digital platform with government initiatives.
