  Forum on Indonesia’s New Capital

Date: August 31 (Wed), 2022

Venue: Hotel Shilla, Seoul, Korea

On August 31, 2022, the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) and the Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND) held the Korea–Indonesia Cooperation Forum on Indonesia’s New Capital as part of the 2022 Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference (GICC) at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul. The forum was jointly hosted by KIND and KRIHS, which have supported the establishment of plans for the new capital together with Indonesian government officials who are promoting the relocation of the capital. The forum was also planned as an opportunity to discuss the Korea–Indonesia cooperation related to the new capital of Indonesia.

In the presentation session, the Minister of the New Capital Authority of Indonesia and officials from the Ministry of National Development and Planning (Bappenas) presented the current status and plans for the relocation of the capital of Indonesia, as well as the financing and PPP implementation plans. Thereafter, Dr. Pan-ki Cho, Head of the Planning and Management Division of KRIHS, presented the case of the relocation of the capital to Sejong City, the implications for Indonesia, and Mr. Ki-cheol Jeong, Head of Investment Management Division of KIND, presented suggestions and the current situation of cooperation between the two countries in relation to the new capital.

In the panel discussion session following the topic presentations, interested parties from the South Korean government, public institutions, the construction industry, and related industries discussed ways for South Korea and Indonesia to cooperate in relation to the new Indonesian capital, presided over by Dr. Sang-keon Lee, director of GDPC. The topic presentations and panel discussions fielded in this forum provided a meaningful opportunity to understand the current status of the promotion of the new capital of Indonesia and to seek practical cooperation plans between the two countries. Since South Korea’s experience and know-how in relation to the successful construction of the administrative capital were shared with the Indonesian government, it is expected that the cooperation on infrastructure will become more developmental and concrete.
