2017 KOICA-UNESCAP-KRIHS Capacity Building on Spatial Data and Technologies for Urban Planning and Disaster Management


Theme: Sharing Korea’s knowledge and experiences in prevention, estimation and management of disasters and spatial data technologies for Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistna’s policy making and action plan

From August 27(Sun) to September 9(Sat), the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), Korea International Cooperation Agency(KOICA), and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific(UN-ESCAP) co-hosted a capacity building program on sharing Korea’s experiences and knowledge in urban disaster prevention and reduction, multi risk prediction technologies, spatial data collection and management for 11 government officials who are in charge of disaster management and spatial technologies in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. As a part of 3 years invitational training project, this is the first year of training project which includes lectures, advisor meeting, SMART Expo, site visits on urban development and disaster management and cultural experiences in weekends at Seoul and Paju DMZ Tour.


The opening ceremony was held at Imperial Palace Hotel Seoul on 29th of August with warm welcoming remarks made by the president of KRIHS, Dongju Kim. Mr. Kim stated the importance of disaster resilient city and emphasized how Korea’s urban disaster management policy and disaster prediction and reduction technologies could be delivered and implemented along with Korea’s own advanced spatial information collection and management for Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan’s policy making on urban development and disaster prevention for safer and sustainable future. Mr. Kim closed the remarks by saying such program and gathering is a great opportunity for Korea and Central Asian countries to build a firm friendship and cooperation.


In this program, trainees are from Kyrgz Republic’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, Tajikistan’s Comiittee of Emergency Situations, Uzbekistan’s Scientific Engineering and Marketing Research Center(UNICON.UZ) under Ministry for Development of Information Technologies and Communication, and Project and construction organization in urban planning "Dr. Makhkamov", etc. Also, Professor Dongkeun Yoon from Yonsei Univeristy, Mr. Moonse Lee from Forest Engineering Research Institute, Dr. Beomjong You from Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, Mr. Dzhergalbek Ukashev from Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction in Almaty and research fellows from KRIHS attended the program.
