KRIHS-IDB Urban Development Academy (KIUDA) 2017: A Roundtable Meeting with the Seoul Metropolitan Government

 During the course of the KIUDA program, on June 1, the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) held a roundtable meeting with the Seoul Metropolitan government and Latin American countries. In the presentation on urban policies and regeneration cases, Chief Researcher of Advisory Group for Urban Planning Commission of Seoul Metropolitan, Seishin Kim introduced “2030 Seoul Plan” that is the highest-level urban planning, established by a hundred of people spending 3 years.


 Afterwards, in a roundtable meeting with the Vice Mayor II for Administrative Affairs of the Seoul Metropolitan, Jewon Lee, the delegation of each country shared the key issues; metropolitan management, governance of the central and local government, housing support for low-income groups, state’s capacity building measures to solve social problems, urban sanitation and urban vulnerability to climate change. Also they made a request for continuous support and cooperation to both Seoul Metropolitan and KRIHS.


 Particularly, in the topic of the central and local governance, the vice mayor mentioned the local government’s limited power, which requires continuous discussion and cooperation between the central and local government. Also he highlighted that the local government should play a leading role with authority so that national competitiveness will be able to be improved as urban competitiveness is national competitiveness. At the end, he extended expectations on mutual development through continuous cooperation between the Seoul Metropolitan and LACs.


 This roundtable meeting with the Seoul Metropolitan government invited 16 participants from 7 Latin countries including the deputy mayor of Panama City, the governor of departmental governmental of Rivera in Uruguay, the director of Ministry of Cities in Brazil and high ranking government officials from Mexico, Chile, Paraguay and Colombia, two participants from IDB, the vice mayor II for administrative affairs of Seoul Metropolitan, Jewon Lee, the director of Global Urban Partnership, Division Sunki Kwon, the chief researcher of Advisory Group for Urban Planning Commission, Seishin Kim and researchers and staff from KRIHS.
