Internship Program Presentation on Country Report from International School of Urban Studies at University of Seoul

The Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) held a meeting for internship presentations on country report of two graduate students, Carmen Zana (SINAPLAN, Peru) and Bui Hieu (Vietnam Institute for Urban and Rural Planning), studying in International School of Urban Studies at University of Seoul, on February 2, 2015 on 2nd floor meeting room at KRIHS. The meeting is a part of the internship program under the MOU, which was signed between KRIHS and International School of Urban Studies at University of Seoul in 2013.

Carmen Zana explained current status of water resource infrastructure management and relevant governance system. In addition, she addressed the issue of water resource loss with the lack of water resource management and associated policy in response to dramatic increase in water resource usage following population explosion in Lima, the capital of Peru. She in the end asked for knowledge sharing program specific to Korea’s expertise in large-scale water resource supply system as a suggestion for improvement.

Bui Hieu introduced space/urban planning system and legal system in Vietnam, Vietnam National Urban Development Strategy (Vision 2050) and investment projects to construct sewage treatment and rain drain equipment networks in Cao Bang. Particularly, background, purpose, budget and work plan of the above projects were explained during the meeting.

While both Peru and Vietnam have long been had an issue in water resource management, a slight difference was noticed in how each country has been coping with the issue. While Peru mainly focuses on the provisional aspect of water resources to solve the water shortages, Vietnam has put emphasis on the management aspect of water resources through preserving and managing rainwater.

This internship program for civil servants of Peru and Vietnam not only provided time and space for sharing successful development experience of Korea but a common ground between Korea and partner countries to build foundation of win-win partnership along with discussing  possible future cooperative projects.
