Theme: Sharing Korea's experience on metropolitan area development and management and discussing future cooperation

  The Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) held a meeting with a member of the Mexico House of Representatives Cecilia Soto on the Ecole conference room on the 4th floor of the KRIHS. In addition to Cecilia Soto, Carlos Rubio, an official from the Embassy of Mexico in Seoul, Korea, also joined the meeting.

  During the meeting, Yongwoo Lee, the head of the urban research division at KRIHS, gave an introduction to the KRIHS, while an associate research fellow Soojung Ha explained Korea's experience on metropolitan area management. Soojung Ha addressed the significance of metropolitan area management, along with the process of metropolitan area expansion. In particular, she touched on seven metropolitan area management strategies in Korea - institutional regulations, taxes, management plan for metropolitan areas, methods to create a legal framework, traffic management in metropolitan areas, public transit system in metropolitan cities and municipalities' partnership-based governance. As for implications from Korea's experiences, she pointed to the importance of the central government's role of linking local governments for metropolitan area management, and the central government's sufficient financial aid to support collaboration between local governments.

  During discussions, the KRIHS introduced Korea's major metropolitan area management policies that could serve as a reference for Mexico. Mexico is currently facing difficulties due to low tax collections, is preparing management methods for metropolitan areas to counter climate change, and is set to amend the constitutional law in September.​
