  The Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) together with the World Bank Group Opening Learning Campus held the opening ceremony for the 2016 KRIHS-WBG/OLC Blended Workshop on Sustainable Urban Land Use Planning and Management in the Westin Chosun Seoul in Seoul on May 30.

  The four-day long workshop from May 30, Monday to June 2, Thursday has 40 participants or working level officials for policymaking, including World Bank’s regional consultants, from 22 countries including developing countries such as India, Vietnam, Columbia and Ethiopia. It is looking to share knowledge and experience as to land-based financing, risk-sensitive land use planning and land market assessment, as well as cases in Korea, while addressing future challenges and explore measures to deal with them.

  Among the participants of the ceremony were municipal commissioner Ponnampalam Vageshan of Jaffna of Sri Lanka, principle secretary Arun Kumar Singh of Jharkhand of India, Tran Phi Hung, director of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam and Nesir Bizualem Admasu, head of Land Development and Management Bureau under the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing of Ethiopia.

  During the opening speech, Dongju Kim, the president of the KRIHS welcomed the participants and called on them to find solutions to the challenges facing each country in the fields of urban land use planning and management. Sheila Jagannathan, the lead learning specialist of Open Learning Campus of Learning, Leadership and Innovation at World Bank Group, urged the participants to continue to have a relationship to communicate and cooperate with each other through online community that World Bank provides such as e-discussions, webinars and other e-learning courses.

  He added that the Blended Learning Workshop was a new platform of the WBG Open Learning Program, calling for active participation so the sustainable urban land use planning and management e-learning can contribute to enhancing future platform and e-learning programs.

  For the coming four days, the GDPC of the KRIHS and the World Bank Group Opening Learning Center will jointly provide discussions about each country’s challenges, successes and failures in land-based financing, risk-sensitive land use planning, as well as land market assessment, with a goal of drawing policy implications that will be instrumental in introducing and applying urban land use planning and management systems in each country.
