KRIHS-IDB Joint Research Workshop on Land and Housing Policies in Latin America

About: “Policies on Land and Housing: Comparative Study of Peru, Colombia and South Korea”

Date: August 27, 2015

At: KRIHS

The Global Development Partnership Center at KRIHS organized a workshop presented by Professor Julio Calderon of the National University of Engineering in Peru, on August 27, at KRIHS. The workshop was organized as part of the KRIHS-IDB Joint Research Program. GDPC is carrying out the Program which aims at seeking implications for urban and housing challenges in Latin America and Carribean countries from Korea’s urban development experience and developing joint research agendas.

Professor Julio Calderon’s research included new housing policies in Korea, Colombia and Peru and major land and housing policy results. Based on comparative study of these three countries, Professor Calderon concluded Peru wants to apply Colombia’s case in Peru’s land and housing policy, adding that adopting social housing of Chile and Mexico is also in consideration. Asked about property right and trade of unofficial residence by GDPC Associate Research Fellow Kim Heesun, Professor Calderon said that the Peruvian government owns 60% of the unofficial residence and selling the land to the residents never happens. KRIHS Associate Research Fellow Park Joon asked about the provision or government support for the infrastructure in the outskirts of urban areas. Professor Calderon explained infrastructure shortage in the areas as an answer to the question.
