KRIHS-IDB Joint Research Workshop on Urban Sprawl in Latin America

About: “New Towns in South Korea: Limits and Possibilities for Urban Sprawl Areas in Latin America”

Date: August 20, 2015

At: KRIHS

The Global Development Partnership Center at KRIHS organized a workshop presented by Professor Gislene Pereira of the Federal University of Paraná, on August 20, at KRIHS. The workshop was organized as part of the KRIHS-IDB Joint Research Program. GDPC is carrying out the Program which aims at seeking implications for urban and housing challenges in Latin America from Korea’s urban development experience and developing joint research agendas.

Professor Pereira’s research on application Korea’s New Town development in Curitiba, Brazil, included urban planning in Korea, case studies of Bundang and Sejong city development and applicability of Korea’s urban development experience in Curitiba. Especially to deal with urban sprawl in Curitiba through the application of Korea’s New Town Development, Professor Pereira recommended a process involving five stages: selection of a site, land acquisition and compensation, construction, sales and completion of the project. KRIHS Research Fellow Moon Jeongho pointed that the difference of public sector’s role and responsibility in New Town development in Korea and Brazil should be considered in applying the Korean development model to Brazil. Which income group should be chosen for the target groups while avoiding top down approach and how to build connection to the mother city should also be considered, Moon added. Adding budget and case studies on conflict management, Professor Pereira will submit the final report before September 15, 2015.
