General Information

Event: UN Hybrid GIS Infrastructure Workshop

Date: May 4, 2021

Venue: : KRIHS, Sejong, Korea (Online)

Since May 2019, the GDPC, in collaboration with the UNHQ, has been taking responsibility as the Secretariat of the UN Open GIS Initiative to support the global open source GIS community. The UN Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) held a series of workshops between April and May 2021 in order to share experiences and outcomes of UN Open GIS pilot projects.

Last year, KRIHS sponsored the pilot project, the UN Hybrid GIS Infrastructure, and GeoSolutions, the initiative’s partner company, performed research to determine the data mitigation methodology for integrating proprietary and open source GIS structures within the UN system. The workshop was conducted over two days, and Mr. Kyoung-Soo Eom, the chief of the Geospatial Information Section at the UN OICT, and about 40 people from the UNHQ, UNGSC, UN field missions, etc. participated on each day.

As the Secretariat of the UN Open GIS Initiative, the GDPC also participated in the hybrid GIS workshop. Dr. HaeKyong Kang gave the closing remarks and encouraged members to actively participate in the initiative’s activities of promoting open source GIS for UN missions, although adaptation to change is difficult for everyone. Nowadays, since many developing countries need to build spatial data infrastructures, the UN Open GIS Initiative’s activities are expected to meet the global demand.
