KSP Policy Consultation for Myanmar: Regional Plan for Yangon Southwest Region
1. Background
ㆍRapidly growing Yangon and the surrounding area in Myanmar required strategic and systematic development plan, particularly to control the haphazard development for the Yangon Southwest region.
ㆍHowever, Myanmar lacked a system for national planning and urban development.
- The existing planning and development framework in Myanmar, developed around late 1800s and early 1900s, was not being implemented any more.
ㆍWith its proven experience in national and urban development, Korea was able to offer effective policy consulting and solutions for Myanmar.
2. Purpose
ㆍTo apply Korea’s development experience to Myanmar’s national planning and urban development and further develop this opportunity for economic cooperation between Korea and Myanmar
3. Project Description
The researches conducted in this project were:
ㆍa review of Myanmar’s national planning and urban development to figure out policy needs of the nation
ㆍintroduction of Korea’s national planning and urban development system—from legal frameworks to spatial and urban planning systems
ㆍpolicy recommendations for Myanmar to develop an effective planning system.
4. Impacts and Benefits
ㆍSupports for Myanmar to develop software (policy and framework) and humanware (human capacity and networking) will help build and maintain a collaborative relationship with Myanmar, and in turn, bring mutual prosperity.
ㆍKorea can show its transformation into a more confident nation with abundant development experience to the world.
