2022 KRIHS-ERINA International Seminar
Date: December 7 (Fri), 2022
Venue: Peace Center, Seoul, Korea
On December 8, 2022, KRIHS co-hosted the KRIHS–ERINA (Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia) International Seminar at the Peace Center, located in Seoul, Korea. The goal of the seminar was to find ways to jointly implement the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the Northeast Asian region. Experts from Korea and Japan gathered to discuss plans for continuous exchange and new partnerships in Northeast Asia.
In his presentation, titled “Promotion Plans and Tasks for Implementing SDGs in Northeast Asia,” ERINA’s Dr. Mitsuhiro Mimura described the current status of Northeast Asian cooperation, focusing on the SDGs and the potential development of a Korea-Japan partnership. Following Dr. Mimura’s presentation, rich debates between experts on the joint implementation of the SDGs in the Northeast Asian region were held. Gang-taek Lim, the executive director of the SD Korea Forum, emphasized the importance of understanding the main characteristics of the SDG framework (universality, integration, and interrelation) and Professor Seung-ho Kang from Gangneung-Wonju National University, explained the necessity for and the role of collaboration between the governments of six countries in the implementation of the SDGs. Dr. Min-ah Kim, the associate research fellow of KRIHS emphasized the need for studies that compare the six Northeast Asian countries in terms of their current situation involving the implementation of the SDGs. She also highlighted important global collaboration relationships, including those between Korea-Japan, Korea-China-Japan, and South Korea-North Korea.
