On September 7, 2022, the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) and the Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Regional Development (IOER), Germany, held a joint workshop on the theme of sustainable urban development planning and vision. The main purpose of this workshop was to compare the urban planning and management approaches of the two countries by sharing examples and experiences of multi-sector land development in South Korea, Germany, and Europe and discussing related policy issues. Researchers from each institution presented and discussed common research topics, including the balanced development of border areas, environmentally friendly urban regeneration, green infrastructure planning models, and data monitoring centers.

Through the presentations and discussions, the participants had time to promote the roles of the two institutions in each country, and through this opportunity, they mutually confirmed the importance of global spatial research encompassing society, the environment, and technology, as well as the policy capabilities of research. In particular, after all the presentations were completed, in the discussion session, the participants talked about the similarities and differences in approaches to data management related to land development between the two countries, and mentioned better directions for convergence research. Dr. Sang-keon Lee, director of GDPC, and Professor Marc Wolfram, director of IOER also discussed concrete ways to cooperate hereafter. Professor Wolfram emphasized a very open attitude to the research topic of cooperation with KRIHS, while Dr. Lee mentioned the history of land development in the two countries and suggested regular joint workshops and MOUs as future cooperation plans.
