KRIHS-WB-Polish Officials Explore Urban Development and Public Transport Systems Applicable to Polish Cities

Date|October 22 Venue|KRIHS, Seoul On October 22, the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) at KRIHS held a workshop with sixteen participants including Michal Wolanski, urban transport expert at the World Bank Warsaw Office; Radoslaw Czapski, senior transport and infrastructure expert at the World Bank Warsaw Office; government officials of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development of Poland and Polish local government officials in charge of urban planning, transport, and infrastructure; and Jo Hyeong-jun, secretary of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of Korea. The workshop was intended to explore public transport policy and related regulations and systems that are applicable to small- and medium-sized Polish cities and to share Korea’s new town development and measures to address urban sprawl. The World Bank experts and Polish delegation came to Korea to participate in the 2014 International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference held in Busan. On October 22, they visited KRIHS and the Anyang City Integrated Operation and Control Center (IOCC). GDPC Director Moon Jeong-ho, Advisor Choe Seong-su, and Associate Research Fellow Seo Min-ho participated in the workshop at KRIHS to share information and ideas on urban development cases focused on the efficient use of public transportation and relevant laws and institutions. The Polish officials actively participated in the workshop, asking a wide range of questions. They showed particular concern over topics such as the green belt policy, location for newly-developed cities, and the effects of comprehensive development considering the transport system on the economy such as revitalization of commericial areas and job creation. Also, the officials showed their willingness to cooperate with KRIHS in addressing the issue of urban revitalization in many Polish small- and medium-sized cities. After the workshop, the delegation visited the IOCC of Anyang City which uses information and telecommunication technology to comprehensively monitor and manage various areas of the city, such as public transport and disaster and crime prevention.
