Seminar on KOPSS Utilization for Customized Spatial Planning

Date|Wednesday, August 27, 2014 Venue|COEX Convention & Exhibition Center The Geospatial Information Research Division at KRIHS held a seminar on "KOPSS Utilization for Customized Spatial Planning" on Wednesday, August 27, in a third floor seminar room at COEX Convention & Exhibition Center. The seminar was part of the Smart Geospatial Expo 2014, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), and targeted system developers and local government workers who were interested in developing and utilizing the Korea Planning Support System (KOPSS). In the first session of the seminar, four researchers from KRIHS gave their presentations on KOPSS: Research Fellow Kim Dae-jong, "KOPSS Platform Strategy for Openness, Sharing, and Utilization of Spatial Information," Associate Research Fellow Hwang Myeong-hwa, "KOPSS Utilization for Formulating Customized Regional Development Policy," Research Fellow Im Eun-seon, "KOPSS Utilization for Spatial Planning Responsive to the Public Needs," and Research Fellow Lee Young-ju, "KOPSS Utilization for Combining Welfare and Spatial Policy." The second session was devoted to presentations from other institutions: chief researcher Park Chan-su of EGIS, a company that participated in the development of KOPSS, presented on "Landscape Development Using V-World Data API," and Jeong Hong-gil, a deputy director of Busan City government, "Establishment and Utilization of KOPSS for Busan City." This seminar addressed the issues of increasing the use of KOPSS, combining V-World platform with KOPSS, and establishing strategies for successful utilization of KOPSS for local governments. Also, successful cases of KOPSS utilization in resolving spatial issues were introduced. In these cases, KOPSS was effectively used to monitor urban growth, determine location of sports facilities, and identify areas lacking welfare facilities. In the discussion following presentations, issues including the differences between the Integrated National Spatial Information System and KOPSS, integrated use of existing spatial information systems and KOPSS, and micro data analysis using KOPSS were discussed. Speakers including MOLIT deputy director Jang Seong-uk, who is in charge of KOPSS projects, and KRIHS researchers participating in KOPSS-related research shared their ideas with the audience that included many local government workers.
