2nd Workshop for KRIHS-World Bank Joint Projects for 2014
On Thursday, August 14, in the fourth floor meeting room at KRIHS, the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) at KRIHS held the 2nd KRIHS-World Bank workshop for 2014. The 1st workshop between the two institutions were held a week earlier on Monday, August 7, 2014. The participants included Victor M. Vergara, lead urban specialist at the World Bank Institute; Mansha Chen, urban specialist at the World Bank Institute; Moon Jeong-ho, Director of the GDPC; Jo Jin-cheol, Deputy Director of the GDPC; Suh Byung-kwon, Associate Research Fellow of the GDPC; and Han Woo-suk, Associate Research Fellow of the National Territorial Planning and Research Division at KRIHS. They discussed potential areas in which the two institutions can cooperate. The participants from the World Bank emphasized that future project proposals would be evaluated based on the expected outcome of project rather than input, and introduced the Program for Results Loan which makes support decisions based on statistical indicators. In addition, the World Bank participants reported that they were developing an online education course in order to increase developing countries’ access to global capacity building programs. The course is planned to start sometime in May, 2015 with more advanced material on land use added. The world bank specialists also expressed their intention to include Korea’s exemplary land development cases in their courses, with support of KRIHS. The new online course focuses on increasing peoples’ professional and practical skills, and provides all-inclusive education without supplementary education materials compared to existing online programs such as Coursera. The course is being designed to meet the global needs rather than a specific country need, and would also be used for training the World Bank staff. Furthermore, the World Bank will assess the works of the land use course participants and has asked KRIHS to act as a peer-reviewer.
