24th EAROPH World Congress: Towards Resilient and Smart Cities
The Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) at KRIHS took part in the 24th EAROPH World Congress held from August 10 to August 12 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Eastern Regional Organization for Planning & Human Settlements (EAROPH) is a non-governmental organization established to foster exchange of insights and experiences in the area of human settlements among the EAROPH member countries. As the current president of KRIHS Kim Kyung-Hwan had been serving as the president of EAROPH since 2012, he presided the 45th EAROPH Executive Committee meeting and the 24th EAROPH council meeting that were preceded by the world congress. About thirty people attended those meetings. Among the attendants were Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, the Lieutenant Governor of Jakarta; Norliza Hashim, the Secretary General of EAROPH; and Bernadys Djonoputro, president of EAROPH Indonesia. During the meetings, the activities and financial status of EAROPH for 2013 and 2014 were reported, and the cases of regional development of EAROPH member countries were presented. The GDPC Director Moon Jeong-ho introduced territorial and regional development projects for other EAROPH member countries, which are being planned by KRIHS, and presented ways for further cooperation. In the opening ceremony of the 24th EAROPH World Congress, KRIHS President Kim Kyung-Hwan passed on the medal of the EAROPH presidency to Hermanto Dardak, the succeeding president of EAROPH. Mr. Kim was appointed as an honorary president of EAROPH. The world congress addressed six themes: “Smart Cities, Future Cities,” “Inclusivity of Cities,” “ICT in Today’s Cities,” “Infrastructure Challenges in Cities,” “Resiliency and the Cities,” and “Urbanism and Sustainability of Our Cities.” The participants discussed sustainability in urban development, urban infrastructure and ICT, and other issues. The next EAROPH regional conference is planned to be held in June 2015 in Japan.
