KRIHS Hosted an International Conference on Geospatial Information Science at Smart Geospatial Expo 2014
Date: August 26, 2014 Venue: COEX, Seoul The Geospatial Information Research Division at KRIHS held an international conference on geospatial information science to hear from spatial big data experts on the topic of “utilization of big data technologies for future society” on August 28th at COEX, Seoul. This conference was held as part of the Smart Geospatial Expo 2014 hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. At the conference, Son Tae-rak, Head of Housing & Land Office at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport gave an opening speech and Kim Kyung-Hwan, President of KRIHS delivered congratulatory remarks, followed by the keynote speech by Leonard Jayamohan, General Manager of Public Sectors of ESRI Asia Pacific. A total of eight presentations were made and a panel discussion session took place afterwards. The keynote speech discussed the importance of spatial information utilization and how to utilize spatial information in relation with big data analysis, paving the way for the first session, titled “Spatial big data – a new resource for government 3.0.” In the following session, research fellow Kim Dae-jong from KRIHS and CEO Tony Lee of Saltlux Co., Ltd. made presentations on “Spatial big data for government 3.0” and on “Linked open data – a strategy for sharing spatial big data,” respectively. The theme for the second session was “Spatial big data technology” and Professor Mohamed F. Mokbel at University of Minnesota began the second session with his presentation on “Spatial Hadoop: distributed processing technology for spatial big data.” Then, Jung Eui-seon, Director of Oracle Korea and Chun Byung-gon, Professor of Seoul National University made presentations on “spatial analytics platform for unstructured big data” and “cloud technology for effective processing on big data (REEF),” respectively. In the third session on “spatial big data applications,” Budhendra Bhaduri, Director of Geographic Information Technologies Research Center, Oak Ridge National Lab, USA, made a presentation on “big data for future energy and urban infrastructures – challenges and opportunities” and Yuki Akiyama, Research Fellow at University of Tokyo, Japan, made a presentation on applications of micro geo data for urban monitoring. Cho Yeon-Gurl, Vice Director of Spatial Information Division at Korea Land & Housing Corporation, made a final presentation on the topic of “developing a priority model to define happy housing zones.” For the panel discussion, Oh Jay-in, President of Korea Big Data Society, served as a moderator, and Song Kyu-bong, CEO of GIS United, Seong Jang-hwan, Director of Land and Regional Research Division at KRIHS, Choi Hyun-sang, Research Fellow at Korea Institute of Civil Engineering, Hong Sang-ki, President of Korea Spatial Information Society, served as discussants, exchanging their opinions on major issues associated with spatial big data and actively discussing the concept and meaning of big data, privacy and data security issues in the era of big data and diverse ways to foster data scientists.
