Prof. Masahisa Fujita spoke on Asia-Pacific Spatial Economy at KRIHS

On Wednesday, August 6th, Prof. Masahisa Fujita spoke on the topic of “Evolution of Spatial Economy in Asia-Pacific: History and Cooperation” at KRIHS in a special lecture organized by the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) of KRIHS. Prof. Fujita is a former professor at the University of Pennsylvania and Kyoto University. He is currently serving as the president of the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and also is a professor at Konan University. The lecture opened with the brief introduction about Prof. Fujita and his works by Vice President Kim Dong-ju of KRIHS. In his lecture, Prof. Fujita focused on the spatial and social changes resulting from the changes in economic structure. He explained how the advancements in ICT and transportation changed a map of regional industries and supply, and how the regional agglomeration economies created more sophisticated networks, citing multiple data and using examples of the Apple company and the auto industry. A lively Q&A session followed, with participation from many attendants including KRIHS Senior Research Fellow Lee Dong-woo.
