2014 KRIHS-GWU Workshop on Sustainable Urban Development On June 5, the GDPC of KRIHS and The George Washington University held the 2014 KRIHS-GWU Workshop on Sustainable Urban Development at KRIHS. The workshop started last year as part of joint activities under the MOU signed in 2012 by the two institutions. This year, Prof. John Carruthers and graduate students in the Sustainable Urban Planning Program visited KRIHS to discuss sustainable development practices in Seoul. Graduate students of GWU presented their research on the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) and Emissions Trading System (ETS); housing development and shape of cities in Korea and the US; Seoul’s response to economic fluctuations; and the Seoul metropolitan transportation system. After the presentations, Dr. Ko Won-seok of the energy consulting company Enercle and Dr. Moon Jeong-ho, Dr. Jo Jin-cheol, and Dr. Chung Jin-kyu of KRIHS commented on each topic, and a lively discussion followed. This workshop provided a forum to discuss Seoul’s good practices in terms of the pedestrian-friendly environment, natural disaster management system, and metropolitan transportation system as well as to promote closer relations between the two institutions.
